Obesity in Pets

It is the most common nutritional disease with the accumulation of excessive fat in the body and is associated with many health problems in dogs and cats. About 30-40 percentage of dogs and cats may be overweight or obese. Overfeeding with lack of exercise is the main cause but other genetic or metabolic factors also contribiutes to weight gain. Overweight pets generally have more health problems some of which can be life threatening. Obesity can cause or worsen: 1) Arthritis,  spinal disc disease, and ligament rupture. 2) Heart and liver disease from high cholesterol. 3) Gastrointestinal problems, especially increased susceptibility to pancreatitis and diabetes; constipation . 4) Increased surgical and anesthesia risks. 5) Skin disease particularly secondary to thyroid deficiency or lower resistance to infections. 6) Mental irritability (discomfort), heat and exercise intolerance. 7) In addition obesity may increase the risk of cancer particularly fatty tumors. All these can not only shorten a pets' life but also cost the owner a lot extra money in the unnecessary medical bills. What Causes Obesity? Mostly the intake of excessive calories or consuming too much food and too little exercise or both. Pets fed home cooked meals, table scraps, treats and snacks have a higher incident of obesity than those fed only commercial foods. How is the Obesity Managed? The most important aspect of a successful weight reduction program, is to convince and commit yourself.

Anything short of total commitment results in frustration, wasted time, effort and money.

Appropriately reduce the caloric intake and increase the exercise. At home, the

management of the over-weight pet should include the following:

       1) Set a weight reduction goal and steps necessary to achieve it. 2) Decrease your pet's caloric intake by feeding a low calorie , high fiber and low fat diet specifically formulated for weight reduction. 3) Keep your pet out of the room when food is being prepared and eaten by the family Feeding your pet before the family eats helps reduce begging. 4) Do not feed obese pets with other pets. 5) Do not feed anything other than the amount of food prescribed. 6) Keep a record of your pet's weight.
