 Dental Care of Pets

Like us, even pets need routine professional and home dental care. Periodontitis is the most common cause of bad breath and can lead to the loosening of teeth and even infection in the blood stream to cause heart, liver and kidney problems. It starts with plaque which is nothing but the combination of food particles, bacteria & their by-products and saliva. If plaque is not removed or cleaned on regular basis, it builds up and becomes mineralized...also called calculus.

Tarter traps more food debris and the bacteria which eventually leads to inflammation,  infection of the gums, teeth and the jaw bone and the pain. Besides, bacteria produce toxins or poisons which can damage or weaken different body organs especially liver, kidneys  heart vales, and cause respiratory diseases. Early detection of periodontal disease through regular physical examination and professional cleaning every 6 to 12 months under anesthesia are the keys to a good preventive program.

We have preventive dental kits with flavored paste and the brushes for home care. Brushing your pets teeth on regular basis at home can significantly reduce the expense, plaque and calculus buildup, and may even save their teeth. Also we have flavored oral hygiene sprays or solutions to reduce the breath odor. Ideally dental care should start when your pet is puppy or kitten. You have to be patient in the beginning to get your pet used to handling its mouth or rubbing on its gums or teeth with

wrapped cloth or gauze around your index finger. Then you slowly lift the lips on one side and gently brush the teeth with the above mentioned flavored paste. This will not only make you feel happy but will improve your pet's health, longevity and happiness.

Hills Prescription Diet T/D is another alternate pet food especially if you cannot brush your pets teeth, as it not only provides complete nutrition but also helps clean teeth. This pet food works as the pet eats because the unique fibrous kibble doesn't immediately shatter as the pet's teeth enter it. The kibble gently cleans the tooth, helping reduce plaque, stain and tarter thus preventing gingivitis. A thorough teeth cleaning is recommended before starting pets on this special diet. Please call us if you want to try this tarter diet or need more information on it. Please call our office how can we help your pet on this T/D Diet.

Likewise Purina makes PVD Cat DH Health and PVD DH Dental Health Canine Formula diets respectively for cats and dogs to provide complete and balanced nutrition while significantly decreasing the accumulation of tartar. Please call us if you have any question at 562-630-2082 or make an appointment for your pet for examination and dental care of your loving pet.
